Design With Green - Japanese Urushi
The green of Urushi jewelry designer Rie Sakamoto's hometown; a lacquer-craft region since 1590
If you think of Japan you may think Tokyo. But Japan is more GREEN than city scene. Over 67% is covered in lush, rambling green. Add to that the rice fields, tea plantations, dense fuzzy mosses, bamboo and cedar trees, and GREEN surely seems synonymous with Japan! It is not surprising, then, that green often works its way into crafts and designs in Japan like these Pistachio Green Pierced Earrings made with traditional, satiny Urushi.
How the Green gets it's Urushi Sheen
Contemporary Japanese Urushi jewelry designer, Rie Sakamoto (pictured here), of Urushi Sakamoto studio, presents Pistachio Green Pierced Earrings. These satiny, delicate pearl-drop earrings are fashioned out of Magnolia Wood which makes them exceedingly lightweight and comfortable to wear. To achieve Urushi's signature satiny glow on Pistachio Green earrings, craft artists meticulously apply, and thoroughly dry, fifteen layers of refined Urushi sap starting with layers of jet-black sap and layers of pistachio green pigmented Urushi. Silver-leaf overlay is applied by craft artists using specialize tool with the upmost care and precision during the drying process. This adds further depth of color, design and shine to the final crafted product. To preserve and protect this sheen, the earrings are then sealed twice with urethane resin. Makes for an amazing gift or authentic souvenir of Japan for yourself or someone special.
Japanese Traditional Urushi - What is it?
Urushi lacquer is a versatile, all natural sap from the Urushi tree - a tree native to Asia. This amazing, lustrous sap has been part of Japanese history and culture for over 7000 years dating back to the prehistoric Jomon period! You can read more about that HERE. Though the story of Urushi with practical applications long ago - Urushi is a great adhesive and extremely durable when hardened - its longevity may also be due to its amazing aesthetic - a beautiful and alluring, high luster and a soft, luxurious glow. It is perhaps these characteristics that have long inspired creativity beyond practical uses and put Urushi on par with other jewelry material such as gold, silver and gem stones. A traditional craft, Urushi jewelry now also rightfully takes it place in contemporary fashion and design.
