Japanese Hand Hammer Copper CraftArtist ShimakuraNationally awarded Traditional Master Craftsman, Masayuki Shimakura created this exquisite two-cup, hand-hammered-pour-over copper coffee pot with an extra slim gooseneck spout in earthy blue patina for the true coffee connoisseur. 

Blow after blow, strike after strike, hundred to many thousands of times, the master meticulously hand hammers the base from a single sheet of copper, creating the signature dimpled pattern - the hand-hammer impressions of authentic tsuiki-douki copperware craftsmanship.

Working from an old family studio nestled quietly among the rice fields of Niigata, Japan, Master Shimakura draws encouragement from the deep historical roots of the area where metal work dates from the Edo Period (1603), and where hand hammering (Tsuiki-douki) advanced from 1868. Master Shimakura relies heavily on those traditional techniques honed and handed down generations, and his own hard-won mastery, to now create these handmade copper objects that complement modern life. 

CraftArt That's All Hands On 

Master Shimakura hand hammering a vase JapanThe hammering process is a long one (days, weeks...) and requires not only years-learned skills, but patience and dedication.  A typical craftArtist would require at least 10 years to master this type of coffee pot.  Master Shimakura is one of a very few remaining that produces this highly specialized craftArt.

The hammering process is not random movement, but rather one that is a carefully orchestrated, one that consists of exacting and consistent hammering strength and precise hammer placement. Hit it, tap it rap it too hard, or too soft the object loses its important feel.  With each and every strike carefully spaced, the Master sculpts and "shrinks" this unique, two-cup pour-over coffee pot into form. 

Throughout the sculpting process, the coffee pot is not only repeatedly hammered, but also repeatedly heated in a red-hot furnace to soften the hardening copper and soaked in water over and over.

Special Gooseneck Spout

For the perfect pour-over coffee experience, the Master also carefully and skillfully hammers an extra slim gooseneck spout to a fine point to ensure that a slow, steady flow of hot water will reach the freshly ground coffee beans for the perfect, aroma-rich morning coffee experience.

To finish, smooth and protect the signature dimpled pattern on the surface, the Master then applies various traditional and modern techniques to create and color with the bluish patina and yet at the same time to preserve the dimpled, hammered copper color as well. The Two-Cup Pour-over Coffee Pot is then sealed with lacquer and signed by the artist.   The pot inside is lined in tin for quality taste and ease of care.

Due to the nature of the high-end, one-at-a-time, craft-making processes, individual products may vary slightly in color (from our website photos and one from another) slightly in size, and in other product qualities.

Material:  Copper outside; inside base and spout are lined with tin for ease of daily use. 
Care:  The fine lacquer coating helps prevent tarnish, and for best care wash by hand with water only or a non-alkaline dish soap. Dry and buff often with a soft cloth. (do not use any scouring pads).  Caution:  Handle is covered in bamboo, but will get fairly hot so use of a potholder is advised.
