Japanese Master | Handcrafted Copper Slim Vase

Master Copper Hand-Hammer Artist Mr. Shimakura of Japan

 — This hand-crafted, Ikebana Copper Slim Vase is simple in form, yet, its unique dimpled pattern, its bluish patina and copper design finish clearly gives credit to a expertly-trained artisan, and a skilled craftsman;  a tribute Japanese quality, culture and history and committment to a craft.

Master Copper Artisan

Working from his family studio quietly nestled in the rice fields of Niigata, Japan, Master Copper Artisan, Masayuki Shimakura, draws encouragement from the deep historical roots of the area where metal work began in the Edo Period (1603), and where hand-hammering (Tsuiki-douki) advanced to modern form from 1868. Mr. Shimakura relies heavily on those traditional techniques handed down generations, and his own hard-won mastery, to now create simple and striking, handmade contemporary copper objects that complement modern life – thereby adding new energy, new use, to a traditional Japanese craftArt.

Rhythmic Sound of CraftArt

Blow after blow, strike after strike, up to several hundred thousand times, the Master Craftsman meticulously hand hammers a single sheet of copper to produce the signature dimpled pattern as he sculpts and "shrinks" the Ikebana Vase into form.  Throughout this long process, the Master use a variety of self made tools and devices specially designed for this craftArt. As he works, the object is repeatedly heated in a furnace, round after round, softening the hardening copper and then hammering the vase into its final shape.

The vase is then dipped in a special coloring solution that adds a golden/bluish/purplish hue to the surface, and yet preserves the intricate hand-hammered marks of the Master craftsman through the natural copper color that outline the hammer marks.  To finish, the Ikebana vase is then sealed with special lacquer, polished and signed by the craftArtist, Shimakura.
