Breeze: Suruga Bamboo Basketry
Thin, elegant lines crisscrossed; rounded strips arched into soft curves; diamond spaces filled with light - - all combine to create the unique and distinctive features of Suruga Bamboo Basketry and this Japanese vase, Breeze.
Tokugawa Shogun Craft
Though Suruga Bamboo Basketry looks contemporary in form, its roots can be traced back to 1607 with the arrival of the Shogunate Tokugawa, to Suruga Province (now Shizuoka Prefecture).
From these noble roots, Suruga Bamboo Craft Guild artists continue to create, generation after generation, these lacy woven bamboo objects. The lines formed through this special weave using rounded bamboo strips help create this soft weave - the rounded strips the signature feature of Suruga Basketry. These strips must be precisely cut and re-cut, shaped, and re-shaped, heated, bent and manipulated to form those diamond spaces and to create the distinct, clear form. This skill of the craft artist is not easily won and often takes years of training with some artists apprenticing a decade to acquire the skill. In 1976, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of Suruga Basketry, formally designated it as a National Traditional Craft of Japan.
