Suruga Bamboo Vase:  Deep Forest Harp

Suruga Japanese Bamboo Basketry Tall Vase Dark and Light

Long thin strips of black and tan bamboo strips stretch up and cross like strings of a harp to shape this unique vase created in the airy, elegant, Suruga Basketry style

Suruga Style Has Shogunate Roots

Suruga Bamboo Basketry, looks contemporary in form yet its roots can be traced back to 1607 with the arrival of the Shogunate Tokugawa, to Suruga Province (now Shizuoka Prefecture). In his retirement, the Shogunate had an interest in birds and needed gentle cages in which to keep them. The rounded strips, distinct to Suruga style, were developed to protect delicate wings. From about 1840 the craftArt took off in new decorative directions and in 1976, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of Suruga Basketry, formally designated it as National Traditional Craft of Japan.

Suruga Style: The Secret is the Bamboo Strips

CraftArtist with Fine Bamboo Strips Suruga Style JapanThe elegant Deep Forest Japanese Bamboo vase design is the result of generations of passed-down skills that are unique only to the Suruga style.

The finely-thined and rounded bamboo strips, the signature feature of the Suruga Basketry, are what make this style stand out from all other basketry weaves in Japan.

Most basketry uses flat bamboo strips, but Suruga CraftArtist will further work the flat strips by hand, knife and device until each and every strip is ultra-fine (as little as 0.8mm) and ready to be rounded (many times over) using a special handmade device. These finely rounded bamboo strips, and the extra effort the craftArtist will make to create them, is the bamboo material that creates the light, airy forms and what sets Suruga basketry apart from all others.

How is Deep Forest Made

CaftArtist making Suruga Bamboo Japanese Basketry With Ultra-Thin Bamboo Strips

To start, the bamboo strips are fashioned from the larger, dried bamboo culm. These are then scraped with a knife and then split into workable sizes using a hatchet.

Once of a workable size, the flat bamboo strips are then scraped and even further thinned. These then rectangular strips, each and every one of them, are carefully attended to, rounded, over and over as they are drawn through a special metal drawplate of successively smaller holes.  Tens of, some times many hundreds are thus meticulously  coaxed into the ultra-fine, rounded bamboo material used in Suruga craftArt basketry.  Suruga is the only basketry style in Japan traditionally using such fine, rounded and delicate-looking bamboo material.

Though these fine, delicate-looking strips measure as little as 0.8mm (0.3 inches) in diameter, the robust quality of the bamboo material remains intact. To create the decorative objects, a frame of bamboo is formed using a heated devise (for malleability). The craftArtist will precicesly drill evenly-spaced holes which will welcome  each thin strip. The final design takes amazing shape and form through the skills of the craftArtist who then will coerce and encourage tens of, even hundreds of strips, one by one, into gentle forms of fine lines, diamond spaces and soft curves.

This skill of the craftArtist is not easily won and often takes years of training with some artists apprenticing a decade to acquire it.
