Hand and Hammer | A Coffee Pot Takes Shape

From the quiet of the rice fields, comes a steady beat, a strong metal hammer and a single copper sheet...

The Master Craftsman

Master Craftsman, Masayuki Shimakura created this exquisite two-cup, hand-hammered-pour-over copper coffee pot in earthy blue patina for the true coffee connoisseur. Blow after blow, strike after strike, up to several hundred thousand times, the master meticulously hand hammers a single sheet of copper, creating the signature dimpled pattern - the sign of true metal craftsmanship.

Working from a family studio  nestled quietly among the rice fields of Niigata, Japan, meet Master Shimakura draws encouragement from the deep historical roots of the area where metal work dates from the Edo Period (1603), and where hand-hammering (Tsuiki) advanced from 1868. Mr. Shimakura relies heavily on those traditional techniques honed and handed down generations, and his own hard-won mastery, to now create objects that complement modern life.

Hand-Hammering the Copper - Not a lost craft

The hammering process is a long one and throughout its making, the coffee pot is repeatedly heated in a furnace and soaked in water to soften the hardening copper and facilitate further hammering. To finish and smooth, the Master applies various traditional and modern techniques to create the dark, bluish patina on the surface. The Pour-over Coffee Pot is then sealed with lacquer and signed by the artist.   With each strike carfully spaced, he sculpts and "shrinks" this unique, two-cup pour-over coffee pot into form.  With special attention to detail, the Master also hammers the thin goose-neck spout to a fine point to ensure a slow, steady, flow of water will reach the freshly ground coffee beans to make perfect, aroma-rich morning coffee.
